Providence has signed George Mason’s Kim English to a deal to make him the Frears’ next head coach, sources told ESPN.
Sources say English will sign a six-year contract. The school focused on English for the week leading up to Ed Cooley’s departure to Georgetown, sources told ESPN, and an agreement was reached on Thursday night.
English has spent the past two seasons as George Mason’s head coach, improving to 14-16 in 2021-22 and 20-13 overall this season. The Patriots ended the season with wins in his final six games of the regular season and the opening game of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament before losing to St. Louis.
A native of Baltimore, English is a former Missouri star who helped lead the Tigers to 107 wins and four NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named to his two-time All-Big 12 in Missouri and posted his career average of 11.1 points. Drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of his 2012 NBA Draft, he spent three of his seasons playing professionally in the United States and abroad.
English got his coaching start as an assistant at Tulsa under former college coach Frank Heiss. Then in Colorado Tad he spent two seasons under Boyle and then in Tennessee Rick He joined the Barnes staff.
English follows in the footsteps of his former boss, as Burns also moved to Providence from George Mason in 1988.
At Providence, English will replace Cooley, who left school earlier this week after leading the Friars to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in 12 seasons.
