CHICAGO — White Sox center fielder Louis Robert Jr. made it to the T-Mobile Home Run Derby with a little encouragement from his friends.

Robert was initially reluctant to participate in the contest. The contest is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. PT at T-Mobile Park and will air on ESPN. The 25-year-old has said several times that he doesn’t think his play as a first-hitter and second-half slugger will work. However, fellow Cuban compatriots and Derby participants Randy Arrozarena and Adris Garcia encouraged Robert to join the fun.

“We all said, ‘Let’s do it,'” Robert said through translator Billy Russo after announcing his participation in the derby on Wednesday on his Instagram page.

Pete Alonso, Mets (winners in 2019 and 2021)
Randy Arrozarena (Rays)
Mookie Betts, Dodgers
Adris Garcia, Rangers
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays
Louis Robert Jr., White Sox
Julio Rodriguez, Mariners
Adley Lachman, Orioles

Robert is ranked second in the American League, tied for third in the MLB with a career-high 25 homers, and trails only Shohei Ohtani in the American League.

The White Sox slugger hit 11 long balls in June. Then he got ready for next week’s game with a three-run off Chris Basitt in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Statcast said the exit speed was 111.7 miles per hour, and that 450-foot drive was such a solid connection that Robert looked down and paused to see the effect of the connection. When asked about the moment on Wednesday, he laughed, adding that it was not a planned reaction.

“It’s great what he’s doing for this team offensively and defensively,” White Sox starter Lucas Giolito said. “I can’t wait to see him in the All-Star Game and look forward to seeing him hit more home runs.”

Oscar Colas, a White Sox no. was during the off-season.

“I knew he was going to have a very good season,” Colas said through Russo. “I knew he was going to make it. I even said to him, ‘Hey brother, you’re going to have a very good season.’ I can hit more than 30 home runs. 』

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn added: [his projected] tool. …all I can say for now is that he’s clearly an All-Star and is well on his way to becoming one of the game’s superstars. ”

Todd Frazier became the most recent White Sox player to join the Derby after losing the final to Giancarlo Stanton at Petco Park in 2016. Robert hopes to do better than his first home run derby as a young player in Cuba. he explained Wednesday with a laugh.

“I was talking to Adris about it a few minutes ago. “It is definitely an honor to represent my country, Cuba, and I am proud of it.

“We left this country with many sacrifices in search of a better future. I am very happy and proud of you.You will carry your country with you wherever you go.”

Colombian-born White Sox bullpen catcher and hitting practice Luis Sierra will be Robert’s derby hurler, and the two will practice this weekend. Robert is thrilled to perform on the national stage and isn’t worried the tournament will affect his post-All-Star break at-bat.

“He might be a little excited, but I don’t think it’s going to change his swing or anything like that,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “I’m not too worried, but he’s an important part of this team. We just need him to be healthy and come back for the second half.”

Robert is also committed to taking a smart approach to the derby.

“I’m not going to try to pull all the balls because that can cause some problems,” said Robert. “I’m just going to go out there and have fun. Hopefully I can do a good job and maybe win. But my main goal is to go out and have fun.”
