Add umami to your favorite dishes by making your own teriyaki sauce at home using simple ingredients like soy sauce, ginger and garlic.
I love using it to make teriyaki pork, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki salmon, and even chicken wings.
Ingredients for teriyaki sauce
Teriyaki sauce is a thick, creamy sauce that is packed with flavor.
soy sauce – Most teriyaki sauces are soy sauce and water based, but I love adding orange juice (or pineapple juice) for extra flavor. I often use low-sodium soy sauce, but this recipe is also delicious with regular soy sauce.
Garlic/Ginger – Garlic and ginger add great flavor to this sauce. Freeze the ginger and grate the frozen ginger in a box grater for sauces and stir-fries. Fresh ginger works best, but if you really have to, substitute 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger.
sweetness – Brown sugar works best as a sweetener, but you can substitute white sugar or honey in a pinch.
variation – For added flavor, try adding sesame seeds, green or chopped white onions, and citrus zest.
