Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about grandparents? We often hear passages of Scripture that refer to parenting and focus on the roles of fathers and mothers. But the Bible also has a lot to teach us about the unique mission of being a grandparent and what God has to say about it. Today we will look at what we can learn from our grandparents in the Bible.

value of grandparents

Focus on the Family’s Wayne Rice recounts his time as a youth ministry worker and explores who are the most spiritually influential people in a young person’s life. bottom. he shares“Researchers grandparentsWorkers, not youth workers, were at the top of the list. ”

Pondering on this study by Wayne Rice makes me think about the value grandparents have in their grandchildren’s lives. Consider all the wisdom these people have gathered over time. Think of all the treasures of Scripture they have heard and learned over the years. Think about the mistakes and sinful struggles these people have wrestled with, and how it can be an asset in encouraging future generations to avoid these mistakes. God has made it clear that he believes grandparents have a voice and a purpose.

There is also great value in stand-in grandparents. Perhaps you don’t have any biological grandchildren, but you are stepping into young people’s lives as an advocate of wisdom and encouragement. These are precious opportunities for the Lord to pass this generation on to the next generation.

Deuteronomy 4:9Just be vigilant and watch yourself closely.don’t forget what your eyes seeI can’t get it out of my head as long as I live. Teach it to your children and grandchildren. ”

This verse of Deuteronomy is a reminder that when God uses our personal stories and testimonies in the lives of young people, the things we see and the memories we hold carry great value. Let Guided by the power of the Holy Spirit, they can influence those who follow us.

grandparents in the bible

Biblical Jewish culture valued the family in a beautiful way that is often overlooked in today’s culture.

Lois is a highly regarded grandmother in the Bible. She is Timothy’s grandmother. 1 Timothy 1:5 “I remember your sincere faith. That faith first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure it lives in you now.” Lois. helped shape young Timothy’s life and influenced his ministry. Not much is known about Lois, but Timothy’s life and personality show that his mother and grandmother had a profound influence on who he became. Maybe you were one of the unsung heroes in his grandson’s life. You may not see the fruits of your investment in your children right now, but the Lord is watching you behind the scenes and in every aspect of your life, working in their lives.

Consider the influence of Methuselah. He lived to be 969 years old, all the while being able to serve many years through his family line. With this in mind, Methuselah may be overwhelmed and exhausted by the thought of what it would have been like to have had so much time for his children and grandchildren. But this was a mission for him so he could be there for those who followed. In fact, it was through his lineage that his grandson Noah built the ark and became part of the era of salvation in human history in the midst of a fallen world. Through Noah, God was able to fulfill his covenant and continue his promise to one day send a Savior for his people. Methuselah’s investments impacted not only his immediate family, but the lives of believers like you and me today. Grandparenthood is a powerful gift that the Lord will use if we surrender to His call.

Ruth 4:21-22 “Salmon became the father of Boaz, and Boaz the father of Obed, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.” Boaz was another unsung hero and grandfather. He was the father of Obed and the grandfather of David, who became king of Israel. Boaz married Ruth. He was the savior of his family. Consider what kind of family David was raised in. Given his race and family composition, this would have been a unique situation. David’s grandfather modeled such kindness, benevolence and loyalty by abandoning his surname and marrying Ruth.

The Bible says that David was faithful to God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). For a boy to have a heart for God, someone had to show him the love of God. It makes us think about the influence Boaz must have had through Obed’s parenting and David’s grandparents.

Helping to Break Intergenerational Sins

The concept of intergenerational sin is found throughout Scripture, but through the power of Jesus, any generation can defeat them. Romans 5:19 “One man disobeyed, and many were made sinners.

With this in mind, we have the power to share our testimonies and encourage our grandchildren to look away from what they may be genetically prone to. There is undoubtedly evidence of genuine struggle passed down through generations, which could be modified, or at least mitigated, by decisions made.

Grandparents can pass on Bible truths and experiences from these situations to their grandchildren and help them avoid or find freedom in these areas.

Grandparents are important. this is a mission. This is a calling. Glory to God in all generations.
