Use a VPN while traveling

Updated: October 2019

Before I started traveling full time, I had no idea what a VPN was, what it did, or how to use it. But now, even when I’m on the move or at home, I always use a VPN. Very simply, a VPN creates a virtual tunnel between you and her web.

To explain, we’ve created the ultimate guide to using a VPN while traveling.

What are VPNs?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and is basically a private connection between your computer and a website or application. Setting up a VPN allows you to change your IP location, encrypt your data, and access apps otherwise unavailable.

Protect all internet traffic including email, voice calls, videos and music.

when to use

Whether abroad or at home, there are many reasons to use a VPN. A VPN adds an extra layer of security to your computer.

When traveling, we often connect to public or semi-public Wi-Fi networks such as airports, cafes, hotels, and train stations. Anyone on the same network could potentially obtain unencrypted data (usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, etc.).

A VPN is essentially a private network that only you can access, so there is no risk of theft or data breach.

A VPN also bypasses service restrictions and censorship. Many governments block popular sites such as Netflix, Facebook, and BBC to restrict access to services that they believe are against their national interests. For example, if you want to update your status in China and find that Facebook is banned, using a private network will allow you to bypass many government restrictions.

how do you use it?

It’s that simple—Download and install a VPN Apps on mobile phones, laptops and tablets. Connect to the internet and launch your VPN. Select the server you want to use and voila.

Your data is encrypted and your location is shrouded in mystery. When choosing a VPN provider, make sure it has platform compatibility, no hidden fees, acceptable speeds, good server selection, and availability in as many countries as possible.

Are there any issues with using a VPN?

Well, maybe so, but unlikely. Think twice before using a VPN in Dubai, as the UAE was one of the first governments in the world to actually regulate her VPN usage.

Book cheaper flights with a VPN

VPNs give you an anonymous IP address in another country, so you can actually buy cheap air tickets. Domestic tickets purchased domestically are often cheaper than those purchased abroad.

For example, let’s say you want to buy a ticket to/from/within Vietnam with Vietnam Airlines, but you live in San Francisco. Using a VPN to access a Vietnam server tricks the airline’s girlfriend website into thinking you’re actually in Vietnam.

This allows you to take advantage of lower fares not otherwise available.
