If you’re looking for a new luxury three-row SUV, Volvo may not immediately come to mind. But the 2023 Volvo XC90 is underrated and just might be right for you. On paper, it stands up to competition from Audi, Genesis, Lincoln and Infiniti. With plenty of options, you’re sure to find the XC90 that suits your taste.
2023 Volvo XC90 look
Still, per second generation motor trends, the XC90 hasn’t seen a complete overhaul since 2016. But the 2023 version offers quite a few improvements over the previous year’s model, with all-wheel drive now standard on all, if not some, of his XC90s. There are also new exterior styling options, a switch to USB-C ports instead of Google-based infotainment systems and USB-A ports, and upgrades to all powertrain shift logic.
However, the new mild-hybrid powertrain is one of the most significant changes. The XC90 offers three different powertrains starting with the standard 247 hp 2.0 liter Turbo I-4 engine. There is also a 295 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged and supercharged I-4 and a 455 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged and supercharged I-4 paired with an electric motor. The latter mild-hybrid option gives you 36 miles of range in EV alone, or 530 miles in total.
The XC90 is also well designed and spacious for both passengers and cargo. It also has a 9.0-inch infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-speaker audio system, navigation, voice recognition and OTA updates. A 360-degree camera system, a 19-speaker premium audio system, and more can be added for an additional fee.
3 reasons to consider the XC90
The XC90’s $56,000 MSRP is comparable in this segment, but it’s important to make sure you’re making the right choice when spending that kind of money. And three aspects of the XC90 make it particularly attractive: I am making it meaningful.
- The first is that it is a very attractive vehicle. The overall design remains the same, but some nice new paint options complement his XC90’s sleek design. It’s a large vehicle on 19-inch wheels, but it’s not boxy and has plenty of comfortable curves and contours.
- The XC90 also excels with its premium interior. We use high quality materials on all surfaces and offer numerous amenities on all trims. For driver and passenger comfort, Volvo comes standard with an air purification system, an electric driver’s seat, a panoramic moonroof, a four-zone climate control system, heated front seats and ambient lighting. Upgrading the trim only improves functionality.
- Finally, in keeping with Volvo’s reputation for safety, the 2022 version boasts strong safety scores, including a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Proud. It’s no surprise, given how well Volvo designs its vehicles with safety in mind and offers a number of advanced safety systems as standard, from Adaptive Cruise Control to Blind Spot Monitoring.
Other considerations
The XC90 has a lot of features, but it’s not for everyone. And it’s not perfect. In fact, some improvements could be made that could place the XC90 at the top of all critics’ “best of” lists.
The first is ride comfort. Despite its multiple powertrain options and good fuel economy, the XC90 is a little stiff and stiff. Given its size, some of this can be expected. But part of this stiffness is an unpleasant quirk of his XC90, as other rivals on bigger wheels are more agile.
Nice to have, but the 3rd row is perfect for kids only. This is a common complaint with vehicles in this segment, and while the XC90 is ideal for families with young children, it’s not as good for older children. Finally, the expansive and feature-rich infotainment can be a bit of a pick-me-up. Well worth a test drive.
