Buttermilk pie is a classic Southern favorite. You don’t have to love buttermilk to love this great tasting custard like dessert. Buttermilk pie is easy to make for the holidays or anytime. You can’t go wrong with this pie. I’ve never given it to someone who didn’t like it. This is an easy recipe that your family will love. This pie is perfect for any occasion or event and is never taken home. It keeps for several days in the refrigerator and can be enjoyed as a dessert with coffee or as a snack with milk.

Simple ingredients for buttermilk pie:

egg

white granulated sugar

butter

vanilla extract

buttermilk

ground nutmeg

all purpose flour

2 deep dish or regular pie crusts

This pie can be made with two regular crusts or one deep dish pie crust. The pie in the picture is a deep plate. There is no need to pre-bake the crust for this pie. I have never used buttermilk substitute powder in this pie.

Buttermilk pie is a popular Southern dish. This recipe makes 2 regular pies or 1 deep dish.

  • 3 egg
  • 1 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine or 8 tablespoons or 1 stick softened
  • 2 tea spoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 tea spoon nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 1 A deep dish or two regular pie crusts. I used frozen puff pastry, but you can make your own.
  • Beat eggs, sugar, butter and vanilla in a mixer. Add buttermilk, flour and nutmeg and continue to mix for about 1 minute.

  • Pour into pie shell. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.

This buttermilk pie recipe makes 1 deep dish or 2 regular pies.
