Hyundai showed off the design of the 2024 Kona late last year, but today Hyundai is offering all US specs as the new Kona makes its North American debut at the New York Auto Show.

This new generation Kona starts with an electric model (shown in yellow above). Hyundai says it has developed a new platform with the electric model as a priority. Hyundai says it packs a minimal increase in battery size to his 64.8 kWh, which is good for a range of 260 miles. EPA We don’t have numbers yet, but the 2023 Kona Electric is rated at 258 miles. A smaller 48.6 kWh battery pack is also available for this generation of Kona Electric. This allows for a range of 197 miles. This is the first time Hyundai has offered two different packs for the Kona Electric.

Hyundai’s new Kona platform still uses a 400-volt architecture, unlike the E-GMP platform’s 800-volt architecture, so charging speeds are similar to previous models. Hyundai promises that charging from 10% to 80% should take around 43 minutes under ideal conditions, but doesn’t mention top speed. Also, like other Hyundai/Kia EVs, Vehicle-to-Load is possible, but with power he only has 1.7 kW.

Regardless of the battery pack, Kona Electric will maintain a FWD-only layout. The larger battery pack version has a single electric motor suitable for 201 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. This is the same power output as the outgoing model, but with 103 lb-ft less torque than the 2023 model’s 291. The small battery Kona has a motor rated at 133 horsepower and 188 lb-ft.

If you want a gas-powered Kona (pictured above), Hyundai offers two different powertrain options to choose from. Carryover. Equipped with a continuously variable transmission as standard. The N-line and Limited trim, meanwhile, have a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. This motor is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that should prove to be a lot more fun than his CVT on the base model.

Both FWD and AWD are now available, with AWD models likely to drive a bit better with multi-link rear suspension designs, while FWD models make do with torsion beam rear axles. But it does have multi-link rear suspension. The N-Line doesn’t boost performance, but its unique 19-inch wheels, revised front/rear fascias, aggressive rear spoiler and dual exhausts make it look much sportier. The extra sportiness is also transferred inside, thanks to the red accidental all over N-line scuff plates and aluminum sport pedals.

Inside all Kona models have all-new interiors that are much more spacious as Kona is a larger vehicle than before. In total, the Kona is 5.7 inches longer and 1 inch wider than its predecessor, giving it more cargo room and more rear seat space. The shift lever has been moved from the center console to the steering column for more storage space. What’s more, Hyundai says it will run next-generation software it’s eager to try on a 12.3-inch screen (same size for both cluster and infotainment system).

Other notable tech enhancements include more front and rear charging ports, an available Bose 8-speaker audio system, Hyundai’s Digital Key 2 Touch (which allows you to use your smartphone as a key), and OTA update-ready infotainment. , Remote Smart Parking, and even more driver assistance features such as Blind Spot View Monitor and Always-on Highway Drive Assist.

Pricing for the new Kona has yet to be announced, but Hyundai says an internal combustion engine version will be available this summer. Kona Electric follows closely into late fall.
