Milwaukee — For decades, Throttle Twisters has been the go-to spot for motorcyclists in Milwaukee and across the country.

Founded in the 1950s, this bar was Milwaukee’s first black biker bar. After a fire in the ’80s, the tavern was rebuilt and purchased in 1990 by La Toya and his Howard’s father, Mr. Shorty.

Although it looks like an ordinary bar from the outside, this space has been home to the city’s biker clubs like Wolfpack MC for decades.

Mara Davis is better known by the nickname Tadpole. She was recently retired and has worked in bars since she was 14.

“When they set up and cook, I help. While the bartenders serve drinks, I come behind the bar selling candies and sodas,” says Tadpole. smiled.

She said her father grew up riding motorcycles and although she doesn’t ride motorcycles herself, she is part of a club called the Naptown Riders Motorcycle Club.

Now growing up at Twisters Inn, she said the bar is a biker hotspot.

“There were still bikes parked outside. There were bikes lined up.

LaToya Howard inherited her father’s legacy and owns a bar.

“There were no black belts. Everyone is patronized here. Bikers from all over, different branches, different clubs,” Howard said. “It’s a staple in the community, and everyone in the neighborhood knows who we are.”

During the Harley-Davidson Fest, the bar offers drink specials and expects bikers from all over the country to stop by. Both Howard and the regulars at the bar said it was a place for everyone.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what race or what nationality. Come here and have a good time with us,” said biker Jeffrey Buffers.

The bar is not only a space serving the black biker community, but it also serves the general community. They host fundraisers and back-to-school campaigns to give back to local children.

If you’d like to attend, our second annual Back to School Drive is now taking place. You can donate school supplies at 508 W. Center St. through August 11th.
