tomato: To make the best marinara sauce, we recommend using canned crushes. and whole tomato. Using whole tomatoes gives the sauce a slightly thicker consistency compared to canned diced tomatoes. San Marzano tomatoes have the best flavor, but whole plum tomatoes (or canned whole tomatoes) work well too.

Obtained fresh tomato? wonderful! Add to canned tomatoes and add to sauces for a fresh flavor. Make sure you are peeling it first.

  • Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

  • Add the finely chopped onions, julienned carrots, and minced garlic to the pan. Boil until tender, about 5 minutes.

  • Add canned whole tomatoes containing juice and gently crumble with a spoon.

  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar (if using), dried oregano, and mix; season with 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Add 1/2 cup water and stir.

  • Simmer uncovered over low heat for about 20 minutes or until desired consistency. Add fresh basil and stir.

  • Sprinkle over spaghetti or enjoy with your favorite recipe.

Fresh basil is recommended and should be added just before serving.
Fresh basil can be replaced with 2 teaspoons of dried basil. If using dried, add with oregano.
Sugar may be required depending on the brand of tomato you buy.
Leftover sauce can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat on stovetop until cooked through.
