Muddy Buddies.

We grew up with muddy buddies every holiday season! This homemade snack was at family gatherings, sleepovers, and after-school activities. Now that we are adults, we understand why. They’re made with simple, easy-to-find ingredients and are addictive treats that every peanut butter and chocolate lover can get a boost from. Also known as puppy chow, this is a gluten-free party snack. Good news for GF snack lovers! You’ll often see them made for the holidays, but we believe we can offer them any time of the year. No matter when you decide to make muddy buddies, it’s nice to know that this entire recipe takes about 20 minutes to make.

Why are muddy buddies called Puppy Chows?

Muddy buddies are also known as puppy food. why? Because little Chex pieces mixed with melted chocolate and peanut butter are a bit like dog food. This sweet snack originated in the Midwest of the United States. Some remember making it in the 1960s, but in 2002 General Mills (the company that makes Chex) officially developed the recipe.

Can I use the microwave?

absolutely! If you don’t want to melt everything on the stovetop, you can use the microwave. Place the ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 1 minute. Stir, then continue to melt in 1 minute increments until the mixture is smooth.

  • 9 cup rice chess
  • 2 cup semi sweet chocolate chip
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 6 tablespoon salted butter
  • 1 tea spoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cup icing sugar

instructions

  • Weigh the cereal into a large mixing bowl.

  • In a saucepan* on the stovetop, melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter together over medium-low heat. Stir until all ingredients are creamy and melted.

  • Add vanilla essence and stir.

  • Pour the melted mixture over the dry cereal. Stir carefully so that the cereal is evenly coated.

  • Place the coated cereal in a large resealable bag with powdered sugar and shake to coat.

  • (Optional) Pour onto a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. Chill and enjoy!
