Stir-fried Southern Cabbage

This southern fried cabbage makes a great side dish. Or add some cornbread to make a meal. If you haven’t tried this stir-fried cabbage yet, I don’t recommend it. Let’s be honest, when it comes to the table… pass the fork and get it out of the way.this is or good! I feel like you really underestimate cabbage. It is a versatile vegetable and a staple in our household.

Southern Fried Cabbage Ingredients:

  • bacon, crispy cooked
  • bacon dripping
  • butter
  • onions, peeled and chopped
  • green bell pepper, chopped (both red and green can be used in combination)
  • minced garlic
  • small head of cabbage, chopped
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • cajun seasoning (optional)
  • chicken soup
  • paprika

Southern Fried Cabbage Notes:

  • This dish serves about six people, but can easily be doubled for larger groups or family dinners.
  • Here’s a recipe for making your own Cajun seasoning. If you don’t like the Cajun seasoning, you can omit it and add your favorite seasoning.
  • This dish is easy to make with smoked sausage, polish sausage, chicken sausage, or smoked turkey.
  • I haven’t tried this dish with turkey bacon, but I would love to try it. If you don’t have bacon grease, add a little more butter. You can also omit the bacon.
  • Make southern fried cabbage in an iron skillet. For best results, be sure to use a nonstick pan.

  • Store this dish in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last 4-5 days.
  • You can easily cook it by heating it in the microwave or just putting it back in the pan and heating it up.
  • I have been known to heat this up the next day and serve it for breakfast with a fried egg on top. try out!

  • 4-6 slice of bacon crispy cooked
  • 2 tablespoon bacon dripping
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 medium sized onion peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium sweet pepper Chopped (both red and green can be used in combination)
  • 1 tea spoon minced garlic
  • 1 small head cabbage chopped
  • 1 tea spoon salt
  • 1/2 tea spoon black pepper
  • 1/2 tea spoon cajun seasoning (option)
  • 1 cup chicken soup
  • paprika
  • Fry the bacon until crisp, remove from pan and drain on paper towels. Set the bacon aside. Remove excess bacon drippings from pan, reserving 2 tbsp. Drizzle the bacon over the skillet and melt 2 tablespoons of the butter.

  • Add chopped onions, bell peppers, chopped garlic, chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, Cajun seasoning, and chicken broth to pan. Simmer, covered, over medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes, until cabbage is tender to your liking. Some people like the crunchiness of cabbage, while others like well-cooked cabbage. Remove from heat, crumble bacon and sprinkle with paprika. Makes about 6 servings.
