WASHINGTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is set to propose new rules as early as next week that will spur drastic reductions in vehicle exhaust pollution that will push automakers toward a massive increase in sales of electric vehicles. Yes, a source told Reuters.

The proposed rules are expected to cover model years 2027-2032. Environmental groups and some automakers believe that by 2030, at least 50% of U.S. vehicles will be electric or plug-in hybrids due to the proposal. This is in line with the goals President Joe Biden has outlined for his 2021. will ban the sale of new petrol-only small cars by 2035.

In December 2021, EPA Finalize New Lighter Exhaust Emissions Requirements for 2026 Model Years, Reversing Then-President Donald Trump’s Rollback car pollution reduction.

One big question is whether the new EPA rule will be as aggressive as California’s efforts to increase zero-emission vehicles and phase out new gasoline vehicles by 2035.

Stephen Cliff, executive officer of the California Air Resources Board, told Reuters in December that the federal government “will have to consider being as strict as our rules… 68 by 2030.” It is absolutely critical to model it and consider it as an option for 2030 in order to achieve % zero emissions.”

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group representing nearly every automaker, including Ford Motor, Volkswagen and Toyota Motor, said Thursday that the industry supports the move to EVs. “The question is not whether you can do it, but how fast you can do it.”

Automakers have expressed concern that governments will demand large sums of money to improve the efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles that will be phased out over the next decade. “Every dollar invested in internal combustion technology is a dollar not spent on zero. carBonn Technology,” said the Alliance.

Environmentalists want the EPA to mandate significant pollution reductions for gasoline vehicles, as they will be on the road for decades.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will also propose new fuel efficiency standards in the coming weeks.

California still needs approval from the Biden administration for plans to phase out gasoline-only models and has yet to file a formal request.

Last year, Tesla asked the state of California to stop selling petrol cars by 2030. General Motors says it plans to end sales of petrol cars by 2035.
